The New York Yankee Jorge Posada and his wife Laura have just completed a’ poignant memoir, “The Beauty of Love”. The book is filled with anecdotes from family members and Yankee teammates Derek Jeter and Tino Martinez and chronicles the fate of little Jorge Luis, whose misshapen skull and off-kilter eyes and nose led to a diagnosis of a rare condition, craniosynostosis, when he was only 10 days old.
From the day they met, Jorge and Laura Posada seem to have a charmed life. She was his dark-haired attorney and sometime model and actress from his native Puerto Rico and he was an up-and-coming major league baseball player, starting catcher for the New York Yankees. The Posada’s lived a charmed life and even Laura’s pre-wedding pregnancy was greeted as a blessing.
Yes a charmed life indeed ,until the moment little Jorge Luis was born, Nov. 28, 1999. the couple Immediately knew something was very wrong and the illusion of perfection was shattered . The couple was devastated and instinctively hid their pain and their fragile baby from the world.
Six years later little Jorge’s struggle gave birth to the Jorge Posada Foundation, named for him, not his famous father. The foundation offers educational and financial support to families struggling with the disease, it’s even earned kudos from President Obama in April at a White House event.
In the book , Laura writes, that she and Jorge realized they made a mistake by closing themselves off from family and friends in the first dark years of Jorge Luis’ battle and even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges, families can grow closer and find profound joy.
