A former Lower East Side hipster who moved to the city from Spain to day trade owes the IRS a whopping $172 million in back taxes, according to a new report. A federal tax lien was filed last month against Marcos Esparza Bofill, who the IRS claims owes an astounding amount of Taxes in connection with his 2006 returns.

Esparza Bofill, who moved to Manhattan to become a day trader, has since moved back to his native Barcelona. Since the IRS does not comment on individual returns, it remains unclear how they arrived at the $172 million amount. My guess is Esparza Bofill is another victim of an unreconciled profit and loss statement on his trading activities.

In order to owe this kind of money, a person would have to earn in excess $500 million a year. According to his friend Adam Baruchowitz, who once operated a website with Esparza Bofill,Bofill returned to Spain after his day trading proved unsuccessful. Sources claim Esparza Bofill has spoken about possibly returning to the US , I would however suggest a new accountant.
