Everybody remembers Sally Hershberger for giving Meg Ryan her signature haircut which was imaginatively nicknamed the “Sally Shag.” She also appeared on “Shear Genius” a reality show by Bravo TV. Hershberger, who was born in Kansas and raised in California, began her career of hairstyling at the age of 18. She got an apprenticeship to Arthur Johns, a reputed Hollywood salon while she was still in beauty school. It is said that she is the first stylist in New York to charge an exorbitant fee of US$600 for a haircut. Nowadays, her fees have soared even higher and she charges the mindboggling sum of $800 just to style your locks.
This very same Sally Hershberger has listed her tiny New York City penthouse apartment for the phenomenal asking price of $5,900,000. While it isn’t unusual for certain properties to command this rate in New York, especially when the property is located in West Village, we find it especially hard to believe that someone will be ready to cough up close to six million dollars for an apartment that isn’t even a thousand square feet and includes just 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom.
According to property records, Sally Hershberger bought this property back in 2001, at which time she paid $1,850,000 for it. The apartment has a modestly sized entrance hall. The living room in the corner has huge casement windows and a set of casement French doors that open out onto the wraparound terrace. Hardwood floors, an Arne Jacobson Egg Chair, and a Vernor Panton capiz shell chandelier that looks like a vintage piece are the highlights of this room.
The kitchen is small, yet functional and it opens onto the living room. It is fitted with a 4-burner Viking range, sleek, matte white cabinets, 24″ stainless steel Sub-Zero fridge and freezer, a microwave mounted under the cabinets, and a large work island. Not a bad place to cook up your daily dose of nutrition and calories.
The corner bedroom has three casement windows, all of which open out onto the expansive terrace. This wraparound terrace has a combination of brick and narrow plank decking. Rectangular planters are set in a row sprouting sea grass. This is a great spot to place a few loungers, soak in the sun and take in the views of the Manhattan skyline.
We wish Ms Hershberger luck and hope that she is able to find someone who will willingly dish out six million dollars for this small penthouse apartment, which, we have to confess does have its high points. But are they realistically worth all that money? Let’s wait and watch.
