J. Crew’s spring collection may be in stores, but the fall 2010 collection was unveiled recently at Milk Studios a couple weeks ago. Even from a distant glance at the presentation, it’s obvious that J. Crew’s Creative Director Jenna Lyons continues to hit the nail on the head.
Lyons told Stylist her collection was inspired by ‘Edie Beale goes to Girl Scout camp,’ referring Jackie O’s quirky cousin who lived with her equally eccentric mother at Grey Gardens. The collection has a rough and tough yet playful and romantic appeal. Think bohemian bourgeois. The collection, which is item driven, has vests and jackets to boot. Continuing the sparkle trend, sequins can be found on skirts, T-shirts, and dressy tops. Furs stand out in dusty rose and camel hues. Pants are pleated and belted and shorts worn with opaque tights and knee highs are popular combinations. (I’m digging the beige shorts with burnt yellow colored tights look.)
Contrasting textures create this eye catching eclectic collection. The styling embodies a nonchalant attitude, yet the result is quite refined. Sparkling silver sequined shirts worn with dusty brown tweed coats, creamy tulle skirts paired with dark olive cargo jackets embody a care-free yet sophisticated attitude. While the color palette ranges from camels, brown, dusty pinks, burnt yellows, and silver, it is predominantly olive based which Lyons admits to be olive obsessed. She said, ‘my olive fixation goes back to wanting to touch on the military moment.’ (Hm, a noteworthy tidbit: invest in military pieces.)
The girl scout theme even translates to accessories, hair, and makeup. Over sized grandma brooches were styled abundantly on lapels. ‘We let her earn brooches instead of badges,’ said Lyons. As for hair, braids were popular. ‘We took the idea that you slept in it for three days and got twigs and flowers in your hair.” Ah, how that description conjures up childhood memories of doing cartwheels in daisy fields. I love it. The ‘girlhood summer’ look was finished with a flushed, rosy complexion, as if the models had been playing outside all day.
Dare I say, can it be fall again? I have no intention of jinxing our weather, but I’m already looking forward to seeing J. Crew’s fall collection hit stores this September.
