Sean Jay spins at down town haunt Angle and Kings taking over one of New Yorks most loved underground parties. Tuesday at Angle and Kings is the home of the long running “Trainwreck” party a place were NYU students meet hipsters, rockers, wannabe rockers and porn stars .
Having given up a promising medical career in favour of his first love, music, Jay Sean’s started more than a decade ago in Hounslow, west London. Sean stared rapping 11 years ago, in a group called Compulsive Disorder, it was a punk-rap group. After a few gigs and when DJs such as Choice FM’s 279 played some of there stuff. They received a lot of local notoriety.
Sean became disillusioned with the UK’s cynical rap scene, focused as it was, on the colour of his skin rather than the content of his songs. He quickly immersed himself in R&B. “Hip hop was his first love, but as soon as he got into producing. At this time R&B became my mistress and as a teenager, he grew up on a cocktail of music.
Sean surrounded himself with a lot of different influences from black, white and Asian friends. Integral to Jay Sean’s trademark smooth R&B sound is the flawless production of UK super producer Rishi Rich. The relationship, as Sean admits, is based on total trust and an obvious appreciation of one another’s respective talents. Sean feels Rishi’s an important part of my whole career, “he’s fundamental” says Sean.
