There are music festivals and then, there are music festivals with strange names like Oy!hoo. Makes you feel like saying ‘yahoo!’ or ‘yoo-hoo!’ doesn’t it? And that’s just how you feel when you attend the Yahoo, umm…Oy!hoo Festival. It is an exciting combination of electro beats with a bit of pop edge and retro rock thrown in good for measure. The live performances not only deliver a musical but also a powerful visual experience as the audience is treated to live music and synced video clips.
The Oy!hoo festival opens on the 11th and continues for one more day after that. The performances are at the City Winery. Cough up $35 for an all-access pass which buys you an entrance for both the days. This Jewish music event showcases the best talent in its field and it’s two days of songs, dance, and sheer enjoyment.
The annual Oy!hoo music festival is produced by the Downtown Arts Development, Inc. (D.A.D), which is a non-profit organization. Michael Dorf is the president of this organization and their mission statement is the “creation, development, and production of unique and compelling artistic programming”. D.A.D., has also founded Tribeca Hebrew.
Get ready to meet musicians brimming with talent like Paula Valstein. Paula Valstein gained sudden popularity after winning the Best Performance award in an American Idol kind of reality show on Israeli television, which also happens to be the most highly rated show in Israel. Since then, she’s become a household name and recently played at the Rockwood Music Hall to a packed audience.
Or, you could listen to some ‘urban bluegrass’ played by ‘Citigrass,’ a band that creates a fusion of rock, jam influences and traditional bluegrass, which has a more popular appeal than simple bluegrass acts. You will also meet Joshua Nelson and the Kosher Gospel Singers. Joshua Nelson, a Jewish gospel singer, sings in the tradition of Mahalia Jackson and combines the elements of African American and Jewish liturgical styles.
The variety showcased in this music festival is amazing, and it is one of those experiences that you cannot miss if you are a lover of eclectic music. Take a look at the event schedule to figure out where you are headed on the 11th and 12th of January.
