Last week I had to trek over to Times Square from my office on 5th Avenue. I had a little over an hour to go there and get back for another meeting but I was asked to visit one of our newest locations. The company I work for is about to open a store there next week and I was invited to take a tour before the mayhem begins this Tuesday. The store looks absolutely amazing and I was feeling proud and excited for the company but it was really the location that got me really pumped. I took a member of my team who is a native New Yorker and they were equally pumped and in awe of what’s to come. Times Square is such a small area in the scheme of things but due to it’s height and magnitude it kind of feels like it could swallow you up. But I love that part of New York. It’s funny because, locals tend to avoid Times Square. They prefer to avoid the crazy busy parts with lots of tourists, too many cabbies and streets beginning and ending every which way. Not me, I like to be right in middle of those parts taking it all in. Okay, maybe not every day, all day but this visit totally made my day and it had everything to do with the essence and the impact of what makes up Times Square.
I remember visiting it shortly after I first moved here. I walked up from my apartment in the village attempting to discover this new city. It was raining but it didn’t matter because I was so overwhelmed by the experience of just being in it. There were people everywhere. Talk about learning very quickly what it means to have “umbrella etiquette”. It was real craziness. I loved the jolt of energy that I got from standing in the midst of it all. Day or night, it is amazing to experience all the bells and whistles with the lights, gigantic marquee signs with different businesses showcasing their branding and huge billboard signs highlighting Broadway’s roster. Times Square is like many places in Manhattan. It is nostalgic and familiar. Even though you may never have been before, more than likely due to the numerous movies or other pop culture venues you have seen it showcased in, you feel well acquainted. I did and I can’t wait to visit again!!
