This years spectacular Macy’s July 4th fireworks display will light up the sky over the Hudson River again in 2010. The Macy’s July 4th fireworks display originally started on the Hudson River in 1958 before becoming an East River tradition at the 1976 Bicentennial . Last year, the Macy’s fireworks display moved across town once again from its traditional East River location to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the exploration of the Hudson River by Henry Hudson. This year Macy’s will once again stage a show stopping pyrotechnic show over the Hudson River off the West side of Manhattan.
The 2010 Macy’s fireworks show will feature over 40,000 shells exploding at a rate of more than 1,500 per minute and fireworks reaching heights of over 1,000 feet skyward. Starting at approximately 9:20 pm on July 4th, the 26-minute display will be set off from six barges positioned between 24th and 50th Streets on the Hudson River. Macy’s this years has increased the amount of shells that can reach heights of 1,000 feet in the sky, providing for greater visibility of the show for millions more spectators.
The fireworks are guaranteed to make the West Side Highway turn into one giant block party filled with firework fan and also creating great views of the fireworks from Hoboken and Weehawken in New Jersey, as well as decent views from Jersey City and North Bergen.
The best viewing area will probably be south of 42nd Street along the pier by the Circle Line. Last year spectacular views were had from the West Side Highway just south of the U.S.S. Intrepid near 45th Street . The other prime West Side public viewing spots include: Dewitt Clinton Park (access from 11th Avenue) ,Pier 54 (limited access from 14th Street),Pier 84 (limited access from 44th Street) ,Selected side streets between 11th and 12th Avenues.
