60 Thompson Hotel isn’t one of those path breaking hotels that one would look at with great respect and pride for having heralded a whole new wave in luxury hotels. It hasn’t reinvented the downtown hotel scene in New York in anyway, and it wouldn’t be fair to compare it to the other more prestigious hotels in this neighborhood, such as Soho Grand or the Mercer. However, in its own quiet and unostentatious way, it still draws attention towards itself.

60 Thompson appeared on the scene relatively late – in 2001. In less than a decade it has made quite a name for itself, especially as a hub of SoHo’s electric nightlife. The guests who’ve stayed at this hotel hope to come back here again in order to experience its flattering attempts to make their stay pleasurable and comfortable.

When 60 Thompson Hotel was opened, something of a decade ago, it hinted at a promising future and for this reason, it was awarded the title of “One of the five hottest hotels of 2001″ by Conde Nast Traveler. Today, you can spot several good looking well dressed teens hanging out on the birch-screened benches by the entryway, and the Thom Bar and the rooftop bar, A60 are known to attract celebrities. Of course, what do you expect? SoHo is among the more fashionable and swanky neighborhood in New York.

The 100 rooms of this luxury boutique hotel have been designed by the same person who did Giorgio Armani’s Central Park west apartment. The rooms, done up in brown- and slate tones, have soaring loft-style designs that are quintessentially downtown.  They are furnished with platform beds, suede headboards, velvet throw pillows, Frette linens, and Dean & DeLuca stocked mini-bars. The enormous bathrooms have luxury Italian marble, making them look stylishly decadent. And, there are always the Kiehl’s toiletries to look forward to.

Thompson 60 has 11 suites, the most magnificent of them being the Thompson Loft. This is a duplex penthouse suite with amazing views. It has a four-poster bed, and a fireplace and it is a great hit among visiting celebrities and VIPs. All rooms come with the following amenities – air conditioning, cable/satellite television channels, complimentary newspaper, television, VCR, CD player, dial-up Internet access, hair dryer, in-room safe, multi-line phone, and turndown service, among other things.

There are a number of public spaces to entertain the guests. We’ve already talked about the two bars – the Thom Bar and the guests and VIP only rooftop bar A60. In addition, there is the Kittichai restaurant, which is, as New York Times puts it, “Liberally and fantastically interpreted Thailand.” As you can guess, the food served is Thai food.

The stylish and spacious rooms of the hotel, the ultrahip bars A60 and Thom Bar, the very popular Thai restaurant, Kittichai, the discreet and attentive service all make 60 Thompson Hotel a winner.
