Working ranches became quite popular in the 19th century, when the Wild West was a fairly trendy idea. East Coasters migrated across the plains to savor the thrill of working at a fully functional ranch. Hospitality was never the main attraction of these working ranches. As the name suggested, you had to work, and that’s why it appealed to only a certain section of holiday-goers. For obvious reasons the affluent, comfort seeking class did not develop a taste for this kind of a holiday. For those who didn’t mind a bit of hard work, working ranches had a special appeal.
These homesteads were also known as ‘dude ranches’ and families on a vacation could spend a few weeks, maybe even a few months here. Activities in this place included horse riding, fly-fishing, and hunting. You could even get a taste of life at a fully functional, true blue farm by helping out in chores like tending to the stock and rounding up cattle.
Now, when you think of farms, you don’t really think of NYC, do you? No two things could evoke a more different picture in your head than a ranch and New York. They are as far apart as chalk and cheese. Therefore, when you hear of a walking ranch less than 100 miles from NYC, it sounds like something that needs to be checked out.
The Roseland Ranch Resort was established in 1957, and it occupies more than 680 acres in Dutchess County. While traveling along Route 65, you know you are near the ranch when you spot the tin cowboy looming in the horizon. During peak seasons, this seemingly off beat place attracts huge crowds. If you prefer quieter environs, it’s best to book a holiday during the low seasons, which would be around winter and early springs.
The rooms are very motel like with only enough amenities to keep your body and soul together! Two beds with sheets, a pullout couch, and a television just about make up the entire room. While not overly cushy, they are adequate to help you rest and gear you up for a day of fun and enjoyment. There are horse rides that last about 45 minutes, which progress at an uninspiring slow pace. However, two such rides through pastures, up and down surrounding hills, into wooded areas and meadows, and it’s time to give your rear end some rest.
There are a host of interesting events and activities that will keep you well occupied and happy for the duration of your stay. You can do some target practicing at the archery and rifle ranges, or you can participate in 35-minute trips on ATVs. There are organized tours of the vineyards in the neighborhood, or you can play games in the ranch itself. The food is great, the activities are refreshing, and this getaway is innovative. The crisp air literally breathes life into your body, and you feel like a brand new man (or woman!) when you return from the Roseland Ranch Resort in Upstate New York
