The Waldorf Astoria, once considered the greatest hotel in the world, this New York City landmark occupies one full block between Lexington and Park Avenue, and 49th and 50th street. This location may be the finest in the city, as it is walking distance to Broadway, Fifth Avenue, the Theatre district and Rockefeller Center in the heart of midtown Manhattan. This century old hotel has over 1416 rooms with more than 330 suites, a full service health spa and state of the art fitness center, and of course a very famous salad. If you are looking for old school New York elegance you have found it in this tribute to New York architecture. There is an air of history with the Waldorf that cannot be denied, but it is lacking in some of the modern touches. The rooms feel grand and in some ways early twentieth century, and for some with that may be what they are looking for, but it has a very different feel from the more modern hotels. The Hotel itself is huge, taking away any sense of intimacy. In addition, while the people were nice the service was generally lacking, long lines at check in and check out, without a real feel for customer service. The positives of the hotel, a real sense of history and elegance, the location, and rates start at $319 with deals available on the Internet. The negatives, Conrad Hilton once called it the greatest Hotel in the world, it no longer is.
