Vogue confirms McQueen’s right hand gal Sarah Burton has officially been named as the Creative Director of the London based brand.
A graduate from Central Saint Martins in 1997, Sarah Burton has worked with the McQueen brand for the past 16 years begining in 1996. Since 2000, she has worked as the head of womenswear design. She is credited with completing McQueen’s Fall 2010 fashion line this past March just in time for the Paris Fashion Week following Alexander McQueen’s suicide in mid-February.
After McQueen’s death, Gucci Group announced it would continue the McQueen label in his name affirming the designer cultivated profound platform for a thriving business. The announcement Sarah Burton will take on the role as Creative Director comes to no surprise to Gucci Group as she is the logical choice. President and CEO of Gucci Group, Robert Polet, said, “Sarah has a real talent, a close understanding of the brand, and the vision necessary to take it forward. We will be giving full support to Sarah and the team in the coming years.”
Alexander McQueen President and CEO Jonathan Akeroyd agrees: “We are delighted that Sarah has agreed to take on the role of creative director. Having worked alongside Lee McQueen for more than 14 years, she has a deep understanding of his vision, which will allow the company to stay true to its core values. We are ready to enter a new phase in the brand’s history.’
