Cafe Cluny is one of those restaurants that if I were to own one, I would want it to feel just like it. It is an intimate space with a warm feeling, settled in the details but always inviting. It is probably home to one of my top five meals in Manhattan and whether I have a reservation or happen to walk in to sit at the bar the experience is consistent. One of the main waiters has kind of an odd way about him but I have come to appreciate what he brings to the place. On my first two visits I happened to be served by him on both occasions and his awkwardness kind of put me off but just like many things in life, his uniqueness grew on me. He definitely knows the menu and wine list and those touches of service always delight me. There is a sense of ownership that assures me my experience will be good.
I recently visited with a friend of mine and we didn’t have a reservation but arrived just in time before it started to pick up. We actually chose the bar even though there were a few open tables. It was one of those nights where we would indulge our culinary appetites at a few different places, starting at Cluny. With a glass of Syrah, we split the cheeseburger and had we not already planned to check out another place we would have quickly ordered another one because it was perfection. There is something about a cheeseburger…once you have decided to order it you quickly remember how delicious the last one was and the excitement to taste it escalates or maybe that is just me?! Perhaps those years of only eating turkey burgers caught up with me. I must also mention the beet salad and the roasted chicken are gorgeous and when it is on the menu, the seared salmon in a wasabi edamame broth is like nothing you have every experienced. Promise! 284 West 12th Street at West 4th Street, 212.255.6900
