There are so many great finds in this city but one of the finest, most consistent and easy to love is Gottino. I have to say I do frequent Gottino, at least a few times a month. There are so many lovely things about it…the wine selection, small plates, decor and ambiance, but most memorable and what really keeps me coming back is the staff. I especially enjoy Kevin and Jeremy. As soon as I enter, I get a smile, wave or welcome and it always feels like I have returned to a familiar place. I am obsessed with the walnut pesto crostini…seriously, I have to hold myself back from ordering more than one serving it is so freaking good. Anyways, there are many delectable bites here and everything is presented just so. Each plate, bowl or glass is a small work of art. If you are up for it, you must, and I absolutely mean must try their chocolate gelato. I have seriously never tasted gelato so delicious. A bolder, drier red grape like Nebbiolo paired with this gelato and you will experience some sublime moments. I promise I am not being overdramatic. Give these two a taste and you will be a raving fan too. They have a beautiful Italian wine list by the glass, small carafe or bottle. I don’t think I have ever chosen my own wine. All of these gents seem particularly proficient with the grape, as though each one is a sommelier in their own right. Trust me, if you know what you typically like to taste, they won’t steer you wrong.
I recently discovered that a colleague of mine is equally in awe of this little gem and now we make it a point to meet there for the end of the day download and meal time. Although Gottino is a small, narrow, true wine bar (with a few tables in the rear and outside, weather permitting) I typically can grab a spot at the bar right away or within 10-20 minutes. If the stars are aligned I can get a seat towards the front where I can catch up with Kevin or Jeremy and feel right at home. 52 Greenwich Ave between Charles and Perry Streets, 212.633.2590
