Breakfast is the most important meal of the day –one that should fulfill a major part of your body’s nutritional requirements. Not many people are able to take out the time to make themselves a good and healthy breakfast, and they usually make do with a cup of coffee en route to work. However, New York City offers an exciting and eclectic array of breakfast options and you are sure to find one that suits your taste and your wallet. Why satisfy yourself with a mediocre meal when you could have a filling breakfast?

One such breakfast option is Norma’s, located at 118 W. 57th St., in the Parker Meridien, which only those with ample moolah in their pockets can afford. This eating place is most famous for its $1000 omelet that has lobsters and caviar. However, be assured in knowing that the menu also includes less exorbitant food items. The absolutely must-try options here are the steak and eggs, buttermilk pancakes, Waz-za (a waffle filled with fruit with a brulee top), pancakes with blueberries and clotted cream, Fois Gras French Toast with asparagus and wild mushrooms, and eggs Benedict with artichoke and porcini-truffle sauce. As you can see the dishes are absolute indulgence for your tummy and taste buds.

For something that is a little more reasonably priced Barney Greengrass (541 Amsterdam Ave. between 86th & 87th Streets) is a great place to be. This quintessential deli has been around for over a hundred years and the food seems to get better and better with each year that goes by. This Upper West Side breakfast joint offers delicacies like smoked salmon, sturgeon and Nova, which can be enjoyed with eggs, and bagels. Definitely worth a try is the homemade blintzes and chicken liver. The price range is $15 and upwards and they accept only cash.

Balthazar is yet another joint that is a little lower down the rung when it comes to the price range. The food is delicious and the ambience is perfect. Having brunch over the weekend involves jostling with the crowd and fighting to find a space for yourself. However, weekdays are much quieter and Balthazar provides the perfect start to the day with their Cafe au lait, eggs en cocotte, and pain au chocolate. This breakfast joint at 80 Spring St. (Crosby & Broadway) begins serving breakfast from 7.30 on the weekdays and 8 on the weekends

Finally, worth a mention is The Kitchenette in downtown Manhattan which was rated by Zagats 99 as “The best place to go for mom’s cooking.” Food here is reasonably priced and you should try the Kitchenette Special at $6.50, which includes two eggs, bacon and cheese on homemade buttermilk biscuit with coffee. You can even make your own omelet by choosing additional fillings like variety of cheeses, choice of veggies like onions, spinach, tomato, and mushrooms. You can also add bacon or turkey sausage for $1.50.
