It can be universally agreed upon that Karl Lagerfeld is the ultimate trend-setter and an undeniable creative genius. Which is why, time and time again he is able to produce beautiful and well crafted collections. As stores are begining to receive their early fall lines, we the consumers are forced to look a head a season. (Goodness, it is mid-July!) Regardless, consulting the one and only Karl Lagerfeld on his haute couture collection for this fall/winter is a must. His unique perspective, wit and intellect shine through his articulate analysis of his collection.
Below is an interview produced by Chanel in which the interviewer asks interviewee Karl Lagerfeld to discuss his recent fall 2010 haute couture collection. Lagerfeld speaks of needing a change for evening wear. His collection plays with proportions and his collection is a hybrid of past decade aesthetics. His fabrics play to the glittery era of the 1970s while his necklines and hemlines speak to the roaring 20s when women wore middy length (calf-length) evening dresses as opposed to floor sweeping gowns. The 1960s was also a time of shorter hemlines representing a silhouette for the modern, forward-thinking and forward moving fashionista. He says his silhouette is for the modern flapper who shows off her waist in fitted dresses which is also emphasized when paired with boleros and voluminous sleeves. Everything old is new again with a twist; thereby creating an entirely new proportion and a new feminine silhouette. Goosebumps anyone? The best part of the interview is the end when Karl says, ‘Fashion is about going ahead, not about memory. When people want to be liked for what they did, they should be stop.’
