Nexus New York: Latin/American Artists
Founded 40 years ago by a group of Puerto Rican artists and activists in a classroom in East Harlem , El Museo del Barrio one of New York’s leading Latino Cultural Institutions.The northernmost Museum Mile institution ,the museum has been closed for more than a year while undergoing dramatic renovations. October 17th marks the reopening of the beloved Spanish Harlem museum and the kickoff of its 40th anniversary celebrations.
This season, El Museo introduces a new exhibition, Nexus New York: Latin/American Artists in the Modern Metropolis, Featuring work from 1900 to 1942, by artists Carlos Enríquez, Alice Neel, Marius de Zayas, Francis Picabia, Joaquín Torres-Garcia, and José Clemente Orozco, the display “examines pioneering Caribbean and Latin American artists who lived in New York City before World War II and shaped the American avant-garde.”
The museum features an extensive collection of pre-Columbian and traditional artifacts particularly a large permanent Taino exhibit, as well as many 20th century arts and crafts About eighty percent (80%) of the permanent collection is art made by Puerto Ricans. The museum features many exhibits on Puerto Rican and other Latino modern art..
The museum also sponsors numerous festivals and educational programs throughout the year and is located at 1230 5th Ave. @104th open Wednesday – Sunday, 11 am – 6 pm.Currently Closed for renovation. Scheduled to open our new facilities, including a new gallery, cafe and courtyard, on October 17, 2009.
