Depressing fashion magazine figures a year ago were a direct result of the economic hardships the publishing and fashion industry faced; leading them to produce emancipated September issues of all the major titles— Harper’s Bazaar, W, Vogue, Elle, InStyle, Glamour, and Marie Claire. However, this year, the economic downturn seems to be turning up as layoffs have subdued, advertisers have bigger budgets, and economic pressures have lessen. Which means the fatter the advertisers wallets, the plumper the issues.
The fattest issue is Vogue with 532 pages–an almost 25 percent increase from last year. InStyle is bloated with 403 pages, making this the first time since 2000 that the issue has had more than 400 pages. Elle is ripe with 382 pages, which is an 18 percent increase from last year. Harper’s Bazaar is up 12 percent from last year with 302 pages. W weighs in at 252 pages, which is up 31 percent and under the supervision of new editor-in-chief Stefano Tonchi. Glamour wins total increase in percent of pages at 241 pages–58 percent more than 2009. Marie Claire’s September issue rounds out at a 10 percent ad-page increase with 156 pages.
