The Opening of the Ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center signifies the “Winter Season” has officially started and wouldn’t be winter without a spin around one of the city’s most celebrated traditions. Since it first opened on Christmas Day, 1936, the Rink has attracted over a quarter million people each year. The skating surface is a mere 122 feet long and 59 feet wide and can accommodate only 150 skaters at one time but Ice skating at Rockefeller Center is the quintessential New York winter experience.
Lace your skates and swirl away under the gaze of the midtown landmark’s sculpture of Prometheus, and with the breath taking views it’s easy to feel like you’re at the center of the City that’s at the center of the world .Here you’ll find New Yorkers and tourists alike swirling and twirling, with the bustling crowds and sparkling lights as a unique urban backdrop. With room for only 150 skaters at a time, it is as intimate an experience as it is incredible.
You don’t need skates or reservations to skate at the Rockefeller Center Ice-Skating Rink. You can rent your skates, but the rink can get very crowded, especially during the holiday season when tourists flock to Rockefeller Center. Your best bet is to skate in the early morning or on weekdays before 4 p.m or wait until the Christmas season passes .
From October 12 to through November 6th skating is priced on the “pre-holiday” schedule, which is $10 for adults, Monday through Thursday, and $14 on Fridays and the weekends. Kids under 11 and seniors are $7.50 Mon.-Thu., and $8.50 Fri.-Sun.But for those of you who actually get a lunch break, there’s Lunchtime Skating for $5 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday to Thursday. For more info, click here, and for skating lessons, call 212-332-7655
Rockefeller Center Ice Rink Location: The Rockefeller Center Ice Rink is located in the center of the complex of buildings between 47th and 50th Streets and 5th and 7th Avenues.
