The Dahesh Museum might be a tiny museum as compared to some of the mammoth ones you can find in New York City, but it is the only museum in the US that collects and exhibits 19th and early 20th-century European academic art, a style of sculpture and painting that was produced under the influence of European academies or universities. Academic art followed closely and attempted to synthesize both Neoclassical and Romantic style of art. The Dahesh Museum of Art is credited with the rediscovery of the rich history and art of the British Royal Academy, the French Salon, and other centers of tradition throughout the Western world.
The museum’s collection includes ancient ruins, landscapes, and a few portraits by renowned artists such as Lord Leighton, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Antoine-Louis Barye, and Edwin Long, whose Love’s Labour Lost is a cornerstone of the permanent collection. A major part of this collection comes from Salim Moussa Achi, also known as Dr. Dahesh. He is a Lebanese ex-patriate who wished to establish a museum in Beirut but was unable to do so. However, New York was a little more welcoming to his dreams.
When you visit Dahesh Museum tucked away in Madison Avenue, be prepared for the fact that it is quite small – so small that you will be done with the all the exhibits in under two hours. However, those who have been there have commented on the depth and richness of the museum’s exhibition. Along with revealing the high techniques of esteemed artists, the collection also gives you an insight into their lifestyles, ideal, and beliefs. Of particular interest in the narrative line of the exhibition. You almost feel like you were travelling 19th-century Europe.
While some might believe that the size of the museum leaves much to be desired, we disagree. It’s just the right size – it isn’t too big to bore you or tire you out. It doesn’t overwhelm you with its extensive collection and wordy literature. It’s a cozy and compact place that you can explore at your own speed. There is a gift shop on the ground floor that has some interesting items you can pick up, even if they are on the more expensive side. If you feel a little hungry, the airy café on the second floor awaits you with nourishing snacks and refreshing drinks.
If you are an art lover, a trip to the Dahesh Museum should be one of the places to visit on the weekends.
