Tired of doing the same old thing every weekend? Bars and coffee shops losing their allure? Don’t feel like watching a movie or dancing to the latest beats in a disco? Had enough of sleepovers, pajama parties and movie marathons? We don’t blame you. After all, variety is the spice of life, isn’t it?
If you’ve answered yes, your life is about to get a tad bit spicier on the weekend. We bring you a list of interesting and unconventional ways to spend your day off doing something that’s going to make a worthwhile entry in your diary.
Let’s start by going on a tour. This is not one of those regular package deals that you may have considered at some point of time. This is a tour that takes you under the bustling streets of Brooklyn and acquaints you with the disused subway tunnel built in 1844. Your adventure begins at the southwest corner of Atlantic Ave and Court, Cobble Hill, from where you enter the dark belly of the tunnel via a ladder and follow your guide Bob Diamond through the sinister looking corridors, listening to tidbits about its history. This interesting experience can be yours for only $15. For more details, call 718-941-3160.
If you’ve always been fascinated by Japanese cuisine and you are also keen on knowing about food that doesn’t add inches to your waist, this next event may be right down your alley. The Healthy Food & Green Festival being held on Madison Ave between 43rd and 45th Sts is a treat for food lovers. There will be cooking demonstrations covering sushi, miso, and you will also be able to pick up locally grown Japanese vegetables such as bitter melon and shishito peppers. There, you’re on a healthier diet already.
For those who aren’t inclined to practice caution with their diet, you can always participate in the Zum Schneider Anniversary Party celebrating the tenth anniversary of Alphabet City’s German beer garden. Make your way to 107 Ave C at 7th St with the sole purpose of gorging on pig roast and guzzling down Zwickel ($7) from German brewery Hofbräuhaus Traunstein. This is one place that a hearty appetite will be appreciated.
Finally, what’s a weekend without a bit of window shopping thrown in for good measure? The Fashion Center Sidewalk Catwalk on Broadway between 35th and 41st Sts is an open-air exhibit presented by LF USA. It showcases the work of 30 well known designers. Each of them have custom-created an outfit which will be displayed on a Ralph Pucci–designed mannequin. Even if you can’t afford to buy any of these clothes, it’s always pleasant to get up close and personal and admire them.
