Who doesn’t remember Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke in the Disney movie “Mary Poppins?” Many a children grew up humming the songs of the movie and thrived on the feel good sense of life imparted by them. We all dreamt of having amazing picnics where chalk drawings came to life and going to tea parties that were hosted on ceilings. Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins was perfect and Dick Van Dyke as the inimitable Bert was endearing.

If nostalgia has hit you hard and you want to revisit those comfortable and warm moments of childhood, head over to the New Amsterdam Theater to catch the Broadway production of Mary Poppins. This first ever collaboration between Disney and Broadway retains the original Academy Award-winning music score by the Sherman brothers and also has some new songs and additional music and lyrics by the Olivier Award-winning team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.

Disney needs absolutely no introduction since anybody who lives on this planet, whether a movie lover or not, is bound to have run into one of its famous animated productions. And, then we have producer Cameron Mackintosh who is already well known for the exemplary work he has done with record breaking productions like The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserable, and Cats. When you put giants like these together, the results are bound to be explosive, extraordinary, enchanting, and as Mary Poppins herself would’ve said, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

For those who are going with the expectation that the Broadway production will be true to the whole movie are in for a bit of a surprise. Along with the addition of some new songs and lyrics, there have been minor tweaks in the story line as well. Some characters have been removed, while others have been added and the famous (as well as hilarious) scene of the tea party on the ceiling is not a part of this production. However, Mary Poppins still flies (yes, literally flies, with feet off the ground!) and in one scene she soars over the audience’s heads all the up the balcony and beyond. If that is not thrilling enough, the audience will be stunned into silence as Bert Tap dances upside-down up across the ceiling in the song “Step in Time.” Told you it would be one hell of an experience one that’s just as great for adults as it is for children.
