If you enjoy being a woman; if you take pride in your collection of your clothes and accessories; if you treasure certain things in your wardrobe for the memories they hold- you must get your girlfriends together and spend an evening at the Westside Theatre watching the Off-Broadway production “Love Loss and What I Wore.”
Directed by Karen Carpenter, the production is based on the best-selling book by Ilene Beckerman by the same name. The book echoes a sentiment that most women are familiar with – that we hang on to our favorite clothes not because of how they make us look but because they are tied to our favorite memories. The New York Times Book Review commented that “This small gem of a book (was) worthy of a Tiffany Box.”
The Off-Broadway is a collection of monologues and vignettes by Nora and Delia Ephron along with the recollections of the Ephrons’ friends. Three different all-star casts made up of 5 members each will use clothing and accessories to enthrall you with funny stories. They are sure to strike a chord with all the women in the audience, who will undoubtedly have similar poignant stories of their own. The piece will be performed in four-week cycles that will play until the first week of October.
In a unique gesture, a portion of the earnings of the production’s will go towards Dress for Success, a charity that is dedicated towards providing work clothing and job support for low-income women. In addition to this gesture, audience members will be encouraged to donate their gently-used purses and other accessories in the theatre lobby.
For all those women who’ve been meaning to catch up with their girlfriends from school and college, Love, Loss and What I Wore seems to be a great reason and excuse to plan a reunion. In the words of columnist Liz Smith, “This is an evening that goes directly to the heart, soul and vanity of every woman, young or old.” Enjoy yourself and follow up the production with an evening of nostalgia with a cup of coffee and your best friend.
