If you’ve got a little daughter, chances are that she is infatuated by the American Girl doll and storybook series. In case you are scratching your head wondering how to entertain your daughter during the holidays, all you have to do is take her to the American Girl Place at 609 Fifth Ave. at 49th St (Ph: 877-247-5223).
The 43,000-square-foot is a lot more than just a toy store. The American Girl Place has a cafe, a bookstore, and theater and if you bring your daughter’s favorite doll along, she too can get a personalized makeover in the doll salon. Young girls love to celebrate their birthdays in the store, making it one of the most popular birthday party venues. If you are planning one for your daughter, make sure you book well in advance.
The American Girl doll series was started by Pleasant Rowland in 1986. The dolls were designed by Götz, a German doll-maker and initially, all products could be purchased only by mail order. The first three debutant dolls were sold with period outfits, accessories, and storage options. In 1998 Pleasant Company became a subsidiary of Mattel and the company’s name was also changed to American Girl. By this time, American Girl products were no longer limited to simply dolls. They’d also introduced books, a magazine, and extensive mini-wardrobes.
Eventually, they also came out with the concept of the American Girl Place, a store that was “much more than just a store.” Little girls can spend literally the whole day here going through five inviting and exciting in-store boutiques. In the “Dress Like Your Doll” shop, your daughter and her plastic friend can get themselves coordinated outfits, while the “Just Like You” boutique allows her to buy a custom designed mini-replica of herself, right down to the color of the eyes, texture of the hair, and complexion of the skin.
If your daughter is bored of her doll’s current hair do, make an appointment at the “Doll Hair Salon” and watch her emerge in her new Avatar crafted by the expert doll hair specialists. At the American Girl Photo Studio, she can pose for a picture get an issue of American Girl magazine with her face on the cover as a souvenir.
Hungry? The American Girl Café, overlooking the Fifth Ave. is just the place you want to be for brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, or parties. And, meals here also include a Treat Seat guest dolls at the table for and a surprise keepsake that your daughter will just adore.
You can be sure that you will be your daughter’s new hero once you schedule a trip to the American Girl Place. The only bit of trouble you are going to have is dragging her out of there. Good Luck!
