NYC’s Veterans Day Parade is billed as the largest Veterans Day Parade in the NYC tri-state area and the country. The parade will begin with the traditional Opening Ceremony, at the Eternal Light Monument in Madison Square Park. The ceremony is approximately one hour in length from 10AM to 11AM and culminates in a wreath laying, 21-gun salute and ending with the playing of “Taps.”
The Veterans Day Parade then begins at 11:00 AM on Fifth Avenue from 26th Street to 56th Street. The city expects over 400,000 people to line Fifth Avenue to pay their respects and show their support of the United States military. On average there are approximately 20,000 people who participate in the Veterans Day Parade every year in New York City. The parade concludes around 2PM.
The Parade features a variety of marchers, floats and marching bands . Participants include active officers, various veteran’s groups, junior ROTC members, and the families of veterans. The Veterans Day Parade has been held in New York since 1929 . This year the parade will also feature a military flyover and the famed Navajo Code Talkers who as young Marines, used secret Navajo language-encrypted military terms to help the U.S. prevail at World War II battles.
