City picks ‘Taxi of Tomorrow’

The Ford Crown Victoria is out. City officials announced that they’ve chosen a Nissan model as the winner of a 10-year contract to be the the Big Apple’s next ‘Taxi of Tomorrow’ ,Yellow cab. The $1 billion contract awarded to Nissan ,in which the city passed up Ford, and Turkish company Karsan as the “Taxi of Tomorrow.” There are about 13,000 cabs in the New York city fleet.

The Nissan model has the look and feel of a minivan, as did the Ford. In a recent poll New Yorkers seem to prefer the Karsan’s sleek look. According to preliminary drawings , the taxi will be set up in the same format asthey are now a long back passenger seat and a partition.

TLC officials announced the Taxi of Tomorrow competition, they raised the bar but teasing riders with a host of amenities including a sunroof, iPod hookup, among other tech advances. Whats unclear is if Nissan has those perks?

The Nissan Taxi of Tomorrow’ should be hitting the streets in several years. But everyone is not happy with the decision and city officials expect lawsuits to be filed. Accessibility advocates have complained that the entire taxi fleet should be useable by riders with wheelchairs.
