Over 10,000 employees who assisted in the cleanup efforts of the World Trade Center following the 9/11 attacks are set to receive $657 million in settlement money.
The funds will be paid out by New York City and contractors to employees who claimed sickness from cleanup and rescue efforts at the World Trade Center. Based on severity of the medical conditions, the settlement will be paid out to police officers, firefighters, volunteers and contractors.
During an announcement on Thursday night, Mayor Michael Bloomberg stated that funds being paid out will range between $3,250 and $1 million. Bloomberg also stated that when the settlement is paid out, the plaintiff will relinquish the city and its contractors from any further damage claims.
The Mayor originally created a task force in 2006 to deal with the several health problems faced by workers during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. At that time, the task force projected as many as 45,000 to come forward with medical conditions following the rescue and clean up efforts.
The settlement was announced just months before trails were set to begin. Arguments in court have been intense in the past few years, with several workers accusing the city of stalling on payments for several workers who faced devastating health conditions. The city has continued to argue the severity of the claims, which reached city wide outrage in 2008. It was at this time where the city claimed that a quarter of the workers coming forward with the health problems were those with minor disorders of runny noses and sleep difficulty.
