Students across New York City are collecting “loose change” to assist victims of the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.

The annual Penny Harvest is a program involving groups of students from over 755 schools within the city.  While in past years the program has focused on raising money for food banks and local charities, much of this year’s program will be looking to help several people affected by the earthquakes.

During last year’s harvest, students across New York City raised well over $665,000. With such recent success, students will be looking to surpass that amount this year.

The Common Cents program was created originally to give students the opportunity to experience to help others and give back to their community.  The program receives great support from schools, parents and the several local communities.

The Penny Harvest has been included in all curriculums, and all money raised is organized and distributed by the students.  Not only do students turn to their families and peers for extra pennies, they are also widely involved in meeting with community members and organizations to put in place their action plan.  This year’s decision to help the earthquake victims was not a difficult decision to make.  Several students have family ties to both Haiti and Chile, and have received numerous amounts of support to assist in their cause.
