Queens county based airports of JFK and LaGuardia is said to be a major reason why sex and human trafficking has increased in recent years.
Panellists at Queens Borough Hall have described Queens as the “gateway” for the sex and human trafficking trade, and have encouraged residents, law enforcement and the media to combat the exploitation occurring all around them. The U.S. Department of Justice have also labelled the I-95 as a “major route” for trafficking into New York.
The sex and human trafficking trade is estimated to traffic well over 800,000 people from various locations worldwide. Majority of that number are women and children.
The Borough Hall conference hopes to raise light on the issue that is widespread across the city and the rest of the country. Conditions of the victims can include sleeping in dog beds, torture, death threats and many other scare tactics to claim control of the victim.
The basis of the Borough Forum was raised by the several ads published in local Queens newspaper’s where sensual messages are published by companies that employ several victims of sex trafficking. They have suggested to boycott stores that sell newspaper’s with the published ads until such exploiting is no longer tolerated.
New York State has also introduced new laws in 2008 to help combat the sex trafficking trade. St. Albans resident David Brown was found guilty in early February of purchasing a 19 year old girl for $2,000 in August 2008. Brown was sentenced to 25 years to life for the charges.
