Today Brooklyn Bridge Park’s lawns located at Pier 1 will be opened to the public, in conjunction with Earth Day. The lawns are constructed in view of going ‘green’, also known as the green park. It helps contribute to a cleaner environment, and thus saving Mother Earth and the environment with the implementation of the organic lawn care program endorsed by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
In view of its green park status and with the organic care program, maintenance and care of these lawns will be through organic methods. The grass will be watered mainly from the rain water collected in a 104,000 gallon containment tank located at the park itself. The program, together with other applications organically, ensures the growth of lush and green lawns while controlling the growth of the weeds throughout the whole year.
Bridge View, Harbor View and Vale will be opened to the public. Brooklyn Bridge Park has great amenities for visitors. These include the eighty-five acres waterfront park, a huge recreational space at Pier 1, gentle-sloped hills, and vast grassy space. However, dogs are allowed at Pier 1 but are not allowed on the lawns.
For the maintenance and keeping the lawns in tip-top condition, they will be closed once weekly for stabilization after heavy public use. However, the management has planned it in a way that the lawns will take turns to close so that a minimum of 1 lawn will be open to the public everyday.
