Captain James Corrigan, who had retired in 1994 after 25 years service, and was working as a fire safety coordinator in the south tower of the trade center on 9/11 was posthumously reinstated to the FDNY in 2002, with full rank and benefits as of Sept. 11, 2001. Today his widow won the right to have his name included with the FDNY fallen hero’s in the World Trade Center memorial.
Queens Supreme Court Justice Augustus Agate said the fire department had included Corrigan’s name in several other memorials and ceremonies amidst the active members of the FDNY who had died on 9/11. Corrigan’s sons, who became firefighters after 9/11, had been granted “legacy credits,” which are points reserved for the children of firefighters killed in the line of duty.
The court stated that it hesitated to get embroiled in the internal FDNY business regarding a matter of such a sensitive nature, but there is simply no rational basis for the FDNY’s position . The FDNY had maintained Corrigan should be listed among the “First Responders”, but not among the active FDNY killed on 9/11.
