Fresh fruit and vegetables will soon be available in Central Park. The city’s Green Cart campaign will start allowing food vendors to operate at 3 locations from next month.
The new carts will provide stuff which are high on the nutrition aspect at competitive prices for example, 3 bananas for $1 or half a pound of strawberries for $2.Parks Department spokesperson said that they were interested in providing varying food options which were healthy at the same time.
New Yorkers though had differing views on the proposed action. One Fifth Avenue resident Mr. John Frearson said that he didn’t want the fruit carts to occupy the space on the sidewalks. Others responded saying that if people wanted healthy food they would go to the supermarket. And that New York was particularly known for its junk food so why would anyone want anything else. A few though responded positively to the proposed plan. They said that eating healthy was a good way of getting rid of the obesity problem being faced at the moment.
The produce for the fruits and vegetable carts will be provided by a firm called United Snacks. Company owner Mr.Cliff Stanton said there was almost no downside to the fruit carts and that they would be providing even fresh fruit salads, which is a novel concept for push carts. The boxed salads will set a buyer back by $3 per pound. It remains to be seen though whether fruit carts can hold their own against fast food carts.
