The Harlem School of Arts is back from the dead as a three-week fund raising effort undertaken by its supporters has paid rich dividends. A whopping $1 million was raised to ensure that the 4 genre of classes namely dance, music, theater and visual art will be continued to be taught at the school.

There will also be some new blood inducted into the school as quite a few new names will be part of the Board  including the dean of Tisch School of Arts. The chairman of the Board is Charles Hamilton Jr who is also a MD at the La Cite Development LLC.

The city officials stated that the fund raising effort was done in collaboration with Mayor Bloomberg, The Department of Cultural Affairs and Philanthropic donors

The school had closed down after revelations that their financial condition was pretty bad. What had angered parents and students alike was that the school continued to take tuition money despite the prior knowledge that it might get shut down soon. An investigation into the dire financial situation by a major news daily showed that the problem was the school’s operation cost which had gone up drastically and the school management was  also causing more problems.

Mayor Bloomberg at an address said that he hoped with the raised funds and changes in the Board of Harlem School of Arts there would be a change in the fortunes of the school and the school would once again be an excellent center of learning.
