Ten people received minor injuries when the atrium collapses at the Sony building in New York City.
Following the major storm that hit much of the US northeast, Ice that had built up on the 32nd floor of the building fell, shattering two glass panels of the lobby.
The Fire department has confirmed that none of the injuries were serious, and all people that needed medical attention were brought to area hospitals.
The owners of the Sony building located at Madison Avenue were given a violation by the Buildings Department for failure to properly maintain the building free of ice. The violation is worth up to $25,000 due to failure of ice and snow not properly removed from the building.
Witnesses of the incident have commonly shared their experiences, comparing the falling glass to being caught in the middle of a hailstorm. The incident occurred while several party goers were celebrating the Jewish holiday of Purim, and caused widespread panic among those in attendance. Reports have also mentioned that cast member Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi of Jersey Shore was attending the celebration; however, no reports have yet to come forward on her well being.
The incident occurred Saturday night around midnight, a day following the owners of the building already receiving an advisory from the Buildings department to clear excess snow and ice. While such advisory was obviously ignored, it was one such incident that those in attendance will never forget.
