Rockaway Beach got a bit of a surprise this weekend when for over two hours waters were emptied due to an alleged shark sighting.
Frightened beach goers stayed out of the water for nearly two hours on Saturday when what looked like shark fins cut through the waves at Rockaway Beach. When swimmers alerted lifeguards about the fins breaking , the guards ordered everyone out of the water .
Parks Department spokesperson claimed the fins most likely belonged to stingrays, not sharks. According to sources it happens a couple of times every summer, that stingrays have been mistaken for sharks. Cownose rays, which swim in groups along the Eastern Seaboard, can look like sharks when their fins break the surface. The definitive call came from the NYPD who went over the area in a helicopter , where they determine that it was rays not sharks.
