A typical Monday spread East Village Community School comprises of pasta, burgers, fruits and salads all of which are vegetarian.
This is due to the 3 schools in the building which became the first schools in the city to adopt the public health initiative of not eating meat on Mondays which was created by the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Health officials say this initiative is to teach the kids about healthy and plant based food options. They also add that it’s good for the kids’ health and eco friendly as well as industrial meat production might be responsible for climate change.
East Village Community School Principal Robin Williams said that there was a pressing need for the students to become healthier and that there were some interested parents as well as staff who wanted to provide good nutritional options for the kids.
The students of East Village Community School welcomed the move. A student stated that it was kind of fun that they didn’t have to eat meat in school for a day. Another raised a good point when she said that the policy taught children to be more thoughtful about their food choices and more cautious about the food they eat.
Parents welcomed the move as well. Children’s Workshop School parent Elizabeth Puccini said that they had asked the school’s food manager at a meeting if they could have meatless Mondays and the manager had agreed.
The whole public school system in Baltimore Maryland goes meatless on Mondays which is something Manhattan Borough President Scot Stringer would like to happen in New York as well. He said that seeing that one out of five kindergarten students were obese this move was a very important move as it was the children’s diet basically which was leading them to an unhealthy lifestyle.
Department of Education’s office of school food said that it was still deciding whether every cafeteria in the city should have a meatless Monday.
