State officials stated that the high school graduation rate for New York City rose from 56.4 percent in 2008 to 59 percent in 2009.
It prompted Mayor Bloomberg calling the results historic and said that no matter how anyone looked at the statistics there was conclusive proof that a record-breaking number of students were graduating on time.
If the students who graduated in August are also taken into account then the graduation rate increased to 62.7 percent in 2009 compared to 60.7 percent for the previous year.
Some schools were celebrating amazing graduation results. Manhattan Theatre Lab High School, which is based in the upper West Side’s graduation results, increased from 42 percent in 2008 to an astounding 92 percent in 2009.
Sophmore Samantha Samuel highlighted the difference that has occurred now. She said that hardly any students could be seen missing class these days and that all the students wanted to learn and graduate.
Although the graduation rates were a reason for celebration a worrying aspect was that the gap between black and Latino students and their white peers remained large at 20 and 22 percent respectively.
Some educational experts proposed a cautious reaction the graduation rates saying that only 44.6 percent of the students had earned the more difficult Regents Diploma, which will soon be required of all the students from 2012. Mr. Aaron Pallas an education professor at the Columbia University’s Teachers College said that there were a large number of high school graduates who on entering the city university needed to take remedial courses. He said that it would take some time for the performance to be replicated in the post secondary school level.
