Grizzlies held off the Knicks to win their 3rd straight match. It was a match full of reversing fortunes as at one time the Grizzlies had a 29 point lead which the Knicks cut down to just 5 in the last minute before failing at the last hurdle and losing 119-112.
Memphis based its game on its strong defense, which was the main reason for its huge lead. Grizzlies kept the Knicks to just 36 percent shooting before the break and had a lead of 63-42 before the halftime.
Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins noted the two extremes in his team’s defense on the two sides of the halftime. In the first half, he said their defense was superbly good while in the 2nd half it broke into pieces and was very bad. He said that he knew that the defense in this game was going to be the match decider and match had proved his point.
Knicks coach praised Toney Douglas and Bill Walker on their match performance and said that the duo came into the game and helped the team to get back on its feet after a disappointing first half.
Though New York tried its best to cut down the lead and even outscored Memphis in the fourth quarter 39-25 in the fourth quarter it was still not enough for the Knicks to overwhelm the Grizzlies. Incidentally the 39 points scored by New York is the most scored by a Memphis opponent this season and the 70 points scored in the second half was the highest scored by any of Memphi’s opponent teams this season.
