Friday night was a welcome one for the New York Rangers as they halted a four game losing streak by beating the Atlanta Thrashers 5-2. Rangers scored three goals in the first 15 minutes of the game out of which two of them were scored on power plays.
Vinny Prospal scored two goals before and after the goal scored by Marian Gaborik who scored his 36th goal of the season. Michael Del Zotto scored a late second period goal thanks to an assist by Gaborik who got a tally of two assists and one goal in the match. The Rangers top scorer had not been at his best since the Olympics due to a groin injury and while Friday’s game certainly seemed to boost his confidence it seemed to infuse even more confidence into his team-mates who rallied behind his performance. Prospal said that it was great to see Gaborik hit form again especially after suffering some injuries recently and that the Rangers need him to score in every game.
Sean Avery was watching from the stands thanks to the Rangers coach who said he wanted to see his winger to perform better and engage more. Avery said that he knows what is being asked of him and he hopes to deliver in the next game that he will play.
With this win, Rangers came back to within three points of Boston for the eight spot. This was Atlanta’s fifth straight loss and it pushed them down to 11th in the standings and enabled Tampa bay to go over them into 10th.
