Animal Care & Control of New York is appealing to people to donate canned food for dogs and cats to help it tide over financial issues caused by a city funding cut.
The shelter’s spokesperson Mr. Richard P. Gentles said that the animals will not go hungry, just that the food donations will help the centre to channel funds into other critical services. He further said that it had been a challenging time and the shelter needed help now urgently. Monetary donations were welcome as well.
AC&C is a non-profit organization, which rescues around 43000 animals yearly. Its Staten Island adoption centre is at 3139 Veterans Road West.
Mr. Gentles said that the Charleston facility of the shelter had a capacity of only 85 animals and is typically a full house most of the time. Most of the animals housed here are available for adoption.
Budget constraints have forced AC&C’s funding to be cut by 5 percent or around $434,000 in 2009. A further cut of 4 percent or around $317,000 was implemented in the current fiscal year and there are indications that the 2011 budget cuts will be even worse.
A pet food and supply distributor in Glendale, Queens is pitching in to help AC&C. Distributors are also selling items below the wholesale cost for those people who want to donate to AC&C.
Donations are also being accepted at the AC&C website. Cash donations can be made by calling their main office or going to their website.
