Residents of the Brooklyn Heights and Lower Manhattan say that the daily buzzing sound of helicopters is annoying them tremendously and is slowly turning into a daily issue for them now. The closure of the heliport on Manhattan’s West 30th Street has caused excessive air traffic at the Downtown Manhattan Heliport, which is along the East River.

Congressman Jerry Nadler along with several other elected officials said that they want the tourist helicopter flights to be reduced or stopped entirely as it is causing a lot of trouble to the residents.

In a letter to Mayor Bloomberg, Nadler and the other officials asked the mayor for implementing a 311 protocol which would help the proper documentation of a complaint made by the residents. They also hoped that the city would improve the present situation by reducing or entirely eliminating tourist traffic. The letter also addressed the concerns over keeping all the diesel for the helicopters at the Downtown Manhattan Heliport which was causing a lot of complaints about the smell emanating from the diesel.

Another major cause of concern were the increasing number of unregulated helicopter flights which had affected the residents living close to the heliport adversely.

Brooklyn borough president Markowitz echoed the statements of Congressman Jerry Nadler and others and said that the borough just wanted the City to address their concerns about the increasing amount of helicopter flights and make sure that the tourist helicopter flights do not cause problems like traffic accidents or ruin the peace and quiet of residents.
