In what turned out to be a even contest between the Phillies and the Yankees till the fifth innings soon turned to a lop sided one after Jayson Werth the first time All Star last year who hit a three run home run to change the direction of the game. This was the second home run of Werth in spring.
Werth, Jimmy Rolins and Ryan Howard ended up with 2 for 3 and had 3 runs and four RBI’s in between them. This helped Philadelphia Phillies hammer Yankees 6-2.
Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel was ecstatic at the win and said that this victory proved that it was only a matter of time before the Phillies got into the groove. Phillies have won 7 out of their last 8 matches.
Even the pitchers are in great condition considering that after three turns through the rotation four of the starting pitchers have ERA’s below 2.0
Right arm pitcher Joe Blanton reduced his spring ERA to 4.09 after holding the Yanks to two earned runs in five innings.
Manuel heaped praise on Blanton and said that his pitchers were all in good form.
Joba Chamberlain kept his hopes of getting the fifth starter for the Yankees alive with three sharp innings. He gave a lone run on two hits. Chamberlain has lowered his spring ERA from 27.00 to 16.20.
Andy Pettitte who was making his debut in the Grapefruit League gave two runs on five hits in four innings. Pettitte who had played in two simulated games before Wednesday said that Phillies were a good team and that simulation wasn’t entirely enough preparation for playing against such a team.
