In an amazing turn of events workers excavating the World Trade Center site Tuesday morning, discovered the remnants of a ship’s hull, from New York’s maritime past. Archaeologists believe the ship was buried during the 1700s.The ship was most likely used with other debris as a landfill to extend the land in Lower Manhattan. The area was a series of wharfs in the 18th Century.

This is a significant archaeological find and according to A. Michael Pappalardo, an archaeologist the wooden planks of the ship “so perfectly contoured that they were clearly part of a ship,” Archaeologists rushed to the site to take measurements, fearing that the modern air would immediately cause the wood may start to deteriorate as it is further exposed to the elements. Pieces of the ship will be taken and then will be sent to a laboratory to see how old the ship actually is.The discovery of the ship, did not deter construction from moving forward at the site.
