When visiting New York City most tourist plan their trips to include shopping, a Broadway show, a night club ,and their favorite restaurant. You don’t usually associate a trip to the Big Apple with the camping and the great outdoors .
But now Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says the federal government will help to develop the nation’s largest urban campground at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn.
Floyd Bennett Field was the city’s first municipal airport but is essentially unused for aviation, except for police helicopters. National Park Service has managed it since 1972.
Salazar came to New York on Monday to announce several new initiatives aimed at improving access to the great outdoors in the New York region.
Salazar envisions the campground at Floyd Bennett Field to expand from five campsites to 90 and may ultimately grow to 600 campsites.
