David Gahr, was a celebrity photographer, who was known for his passion and love for photographing musicians, among which folk singers, rock stars, and jazz players were his favorites. Of the hundreds of photographs he took, the more celebrated among them were of Miles Davis, Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, and Mississippi John Hurt. Some of these celebrities have even stayed in this Park slope townhouse. Apart from photographing musical icons, Gahr also took portraits of non musical celebrities, including artists and authors like Arthur Miller, Robert Hughes, John Cheever, Robert Rauschenberg, Willem de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, and Georgia O’Keeffe. He died at the age of 85 in this very house.

His illustrious character and association with celebrities is probably enough to generate attention in the market. This 25 foot wide, classic brownstone mansion offers close to about 6,500 square feet of space and the townhouse itself is airy and well lit by natural light. Build in the second empire style, this house is 123 years old, and one can see that it is in need of renovation. However, in spite of this, you can see the beauty and character of this house. 42 windows, 11 bedrooms, 2 staircases, 13 foot ceilings, 3 exposures, 5 bathrooms, and a parlor floor that features a living room and an adjoining eat-in kitchen that, which you can also use to entertain your guests…one could go on listing the great points of this house.

As a neighborhood, Park Slope is on its way to becoming a rather elite neighborhood, and there has been a sudden increase in the prices of real estate in this area. Five years ago, you could have picked up a townhouse a little off Prospect Park. However, these days buyers are having trouble getting decent houses for that amount and have to cough up more than $1 million for houses nearer to the Gowanus Canal. The price of brownstone houses seemed to have more than doubled and what was being sold for $400,000 to $450,000 a few years ago is today valued at more than $1 million today.

It can be rightly said for this house that properties like this are indeed hard to come by in the market. A 5-storey corner town house in Park Slope that was home to the late photographer David Gahr is up for Grabs for $3.2 million. So, whether you are looking at this house as a financial investment that will definitely pay off in the coming years or you want to buy this house for its fantastic and colorful history, it’s going to be money well spent.
