The name Beverly Sills (yes, Sills, not Hills!) might not be very familiar to you. In fact, we will have to jog your memory a bit and tell you something about Beverly Sills before we move on to the real estate news.
Beverly Sills was a renowned opera singer, and is best remembered for her performances at the Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera. Along with her very successful opera career, she also appeared in a lot of talk shows, such as Dick Cavett, Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, David Frost, Dinah Shore, and Merv Griffin.
Beverly Sills also had a show of her own, “Lifestyles with Beverly Sills,” which, if you were around in the late 70’s, you’d remember watching on Sunday mornings. It was really popular and even went on to win an Emmy Award. In 1979 she also appeared on The Muppet Show. She retired as a singer in 1980.
So, even while Opera singers aren’t considered to be celebrities, Beverly Sills was someone you couldn’t help but notice. She was a down to earth person and had an undying passion for the arts, doing her bit to advocate them. Beverly Sills died in Manhattan in 2007 at the age of 78.
Ms. Sill’s daughter, Meredith Holden Greenough, has put up the apartment where they both lived for more than four decades. It is a three-bedroom co-op located on the fourth floor at the Beresford. The pale and magnificent 23-storey building was designed by the architect Emery Roth. The apartment is listed with Corcoran Group for $6.995 million.
Beresford, as New Yorkers know, is one of the crown jewels of Central Park West. Everyone knows it by name and most of the lucky residents of Beresford wouldn’t want to leave the building for all the riches in the world, considering the fabulous views one gets of Central Park. Ms. Sills isn’t the first celebrity resident to take up home in Beresford. It’s already had celebrity presence before, including the likes of Jerry Seinfield, Glenn Close, Diana Ross, and Rock Hudson.
Late Ms. Sill’s three-bedroom apartment has high ceilings, herringbone floors, intricate, decorative fireplace and pictures of Ms. Sills in full costume, not to mention views of Central Park you’d kill for. This apartment has a lot going for it. If it isn’t the celebrity ex-owner’s aura, it is the upscale reputation of Beresford…and if that doesn’t tempt you, views of Central Park will.
