Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, after having raved and ranted about the absurd taxes one has to bear in the big Apple, has set about cutting the chord with New York City by selling off his Fifth Avenue Apartment.
Most New Yorkers are familiar with Rush Limbaugh’s opinion on the high taxes levied on real estate for the wealthy in this city. How could you have missed his acidic comments on this matter since Limbaugh made it a central issue that he approached on and off for the last year on his talk show? It all started last year when New York State declared that it would adopt a temporary income-tax surcharge to raise more than $3 billion a year. That was when Mr. Limbaugh brought this topic up on his radio show and said that he was going to “get out of New York totally.” Selling his Manhattan Apartment was obviously part of this plan.
Leaving New York will not affect Limbaugh’s radio broadcasting career in anyway. Although the studio for his radio network is here in New York, Limbaugh has been doing his broadcasting from his sprawling Palm Beach mansion for over two decades now.
Mr. Limbaugh’s Manhattan apartment is the largest one in the whole building, which incidentally, is the former Adams Hotel recently converted into condominiums. This 10-room condo is lavishly decorated has several high points, such as the private elevator entrance, four terraces overlooking Central Park at East 86th Street, a 30-foot-wide living room with fireplace, a paneled study with a gold-leaf ceiling, and walls upholstered in silk damask. There are several ornate wall murals and one that shows palm trees and waves crashing on a beach is particularly stunning.
When Limbaugh bough this apartment, it amounted to less than $5 million in 1994. And, it came with a storage locker and a maid’s quarter. When it was listed, it was initially priced at $13.95 million, but in April, the asking price was slashed by $1 million. Although the exact figure at which this condo has been sold isn’t confirmed, a broker who is privy to the details of the transaction has mentioned that the final price was in the range of $11.5 million. Limbaugh stands to make a huge profit on this sale. Looks like he’s going to leave New York a very rich man!
