The West Village townhouse belonging to Mathew Doull and Vicy Ward has been on the New York property-for-sale listings for a while now, but its popularity ha got a sudden boost by the ugly divorce proceedings that the couple are embroiled in. More about that in a bit, but let’s get the basic details of the property right first. The townhouse, going for a whopping $5,995,000, features four bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and 2 half-bathrooms, spread over four floors. There is no elevator in the elite mansion, though, so it is obviously not the right choice for the physically disinclined. It has been on the listings for a fair amount of time now, initially making an appearance in March 2010, when it was priced at $7,495,000. The price gradually fell, and for the last two months, it has remained constant at a shade under six million.

Coming back to the couple, who find themselves on the marginalia of the celebrity world, it is unlikely they will receive this sudden surge of interest favorably, considering the event that has caused it. Their 15-year old marriage has been on the rocks for quite a while, and their attempts to settle their divorce amicably broke down rather violently, according to The New York Post. They are now both under a restraining order against each other. The New York Post, that formerly employed the glamorous Ward as an editor, goes on to claim that all attempts at civility were finally discarded when Doull audaciously asked his wife to pay for his Brazilian holiday with his 22 year old girlfriend. What followed, in all likelihood, was a very ugly battle.

Vicy Ward, contributing editor and writer for the famous Vanity Fair magazine, has been well-known in journalism circles for quite a long time, and recently became a recognizable figure in writing circles too, with her bestseller on the Lehman Brothers story: The Devil’s Casino: Friendship, Betrayal, and the High States Game Inside Lehman Brothers. Doull dabbles in many businesses, and was formerly one of the publishers of the now discontinued Wired magazine.

They purchased their West Village love-nest in May 2000 for $2,300,000. They made considerable additions and changes to the property over the years, some of these, perhaps, keeping in view their twin-boys, who are now seven years old. The house was originally built in 1860, along with the six others in the row. All the others now have ground-floors converted into commercial and retail space. Not unlike most other townhouses in West Village, this one opens out on Bleecker Street. The ground floor features a living room with a fireplace and a well-lit and large kitchen. The basement has abundant storage space, which is a real luxury in New York. On the whole, the interiors are the work of celebrated designer Katie Lydon, and feature the kind of comforts and abundance of space that only a lot of money can buy.
