Hot dogs go by various names, which are probably as popular as the fast food itself. Whatever you may call them, frankfurters, franks, floaters, wieners, weenies, or tube steaks; we would prefer to call them the staple food for New Yorkers. They double up as snacks or full blown meals, depending on what your perspective is and how hungry you are. And since the recession, they’ve become even dearer to us.

Having tempted you in this manner, it’s only fair to tell you of some of the top places in NYC where you will be able to get heavenly tasting hot dogs to satiate your hunger pangs. Let’s begin with New York Hotdog & Coffee (245 Bleecker St at Leroy St). This place is to be visited when you are in the mood to experiment with Korean taste. Well, you hear right; we did say Korean! The kimchi bulgogi will take you and your taste buds on an interesting trip. The beef frank topped with tender shredded beef and spicy pickled cabbage is to die for, if you are into the whole fusion taste. Never mind the furniture that reminds you of an episode from Jetsons TV series. Simply busy yourself with sinking your teeth into their fusiony bulgogi frank and enjoy!

If you are in the mood for something more conventional and American, Shake Shack will invite you with open arms. But be prepared to be mobbed by fellow hot dog lovers at this Madison Square Park concession stand. The absolute favorites are the franks that are served Chicago-style on poppy seed buns with a “salad” of toppings and a dash of celery salt. If you are really hungry, try the Shack-cago Dog and don’t let the plump Vienna beef frank inside the bun scare you away.

Want more traditional stuff? Willie’s Dawgs (351 Fifth Ave between 4th and 5th Sts, Park Slope, Brooklyn) serve this delicious thing called the Murray frankfurter, which is a beef link planted on a challah roll, then covered with avocado, smashed pinto beans, onions, tomato, jalapeños and mayo. Yum!  Or, you could hop into Katz’s Delicatessen, the oldest delicatessen in New York City. The crisp-skinned, all-beef hotdog is definitely worth a mention. If you are the kind that believes that variety is the spice of life, Schnäck (122 Union St., Brooklyn, NY 11231, nr. Columbia St) is where you should be since they offer up to eight different kinds of wieners.

Finally, this article wouldn’t be complete without making a mention about “the Tiffany of fast food,” as New York Magazine puts it. F&B güdtfood (269 W. 23rd St., nr. Eighth Ave.) With 22 different kinds of hotdogs to choose from, you are spoilt for choices here. Go ahead; try their Great Dane with roasted onions, and cucumber slices or the Healthy Dog, a tofu frank with hummus, diced carrots, and olives. Whatever words come out of your mouth while munching on these hotdogs, they will all be superlative!
