Pancakes need absolutely no introduction. Why waste words on the best recognized food/snack/breakfast food/dessert (take your pick) in the whole world? So, let’s just start right away. Just a note…all the establishments are named in random order. We certainly do not favor one over the other! All pancakes are so out of this world that we wouldn’t dare to.
Let’s begin with Clinton Street Baking Company (4 Clinton St/ 646-602-6263). They serve the best blueberry pancakes that are ever going to slide down your esophagus. Chef and owner Neil Kleinberg reveals the secret ingredient in the pancakes – loads and loads of love, not to mention premium organic ingredients. Those who’ve had them will rave about their fluffy goodness, and though they are satisfying, they don’t lie too heavy in your tummy. And the best part…? The warm maple butter served alongside the pancakes. Oh, so sinful!
If decadence is your craving, binge on the banana macadamia nut pancakes at Norma’s (118 W 57th St/ 212-708-7460). There are several other pancakes with equally luxurious toppings but the pancakes covered in candied walnuts and macadamia nuts, loaded with whipped banana-brown sugar butter is our pick of the day. You may not even want to douse your pancakes with their very delicious pure maple syrup that can be a treat in itself.
Like a little bit of tang in your pancake? The lemon ricotta pancakes at Sarabeth’s West (423 Amsterdam Ave/ 212-496-6280) are to die for. Of course, we prefer that you live and go through a stack of these deceptively plain looking pancakes. One sort of expects the pancake to look a little, well, yellow since they are lemon pancakes but all you get are pancakes with powdered sugar and a little fruit on the side. All you need is one bite and you will drown in a combination of lemon, butter, ricotta cheese, and maple syrup. Drown like a ton of bricks!
Are you a chocoholic and a pancake aficionado? Good Enough to Eat (483 Amsterdam Ave/ 212-496-0163) has chocolate pancakes that are actually good enough to sink your teeth in. Creatively named Peter Paul’s Pancakes (we do ask why, though!) these pancakes have a topping of Belgian chocolate, whipped strawberry butter, and shredded coconut. You can even have these pancakes for dessert at dinner time once a week. Go get your reservations now.
If you are interested in experimenting a bit with your pancakes, try the sour cream pancakes at Bubby’s Pie Co. (120 Hudson St/ 212-219-0666). No, they aren’t really sour or anything like that. They are just made with a special sour cream. Besides, they also serve fresh seasonal toppings along with their pancakes and you can take your pick from peaches, blueberries, cherries, strawberries.
You’ve heard of ginger bread & ginger bread biscuits, ever heard of gingerbread pancakes? Kitchenette Tribeca (156 Chambers St/ 212-267-6740) offers seasonal gingerbread pancakes that are perfectly complemented by warm pumpkin butter. These pancakes are made from whole wheat flour, white flour, cornmeal, and oats. Have them when you have a hearty appetite. Come hungry and enjoy them heartily.
Continuing with the list of incredible pancakes in NYC, apple-cinnamon pancakes are next in line. Plan a Sunday brunch at the Balthazar (80 Spring St/ 212-343-1274). That’s the only time where you can lay your hands on delectable, delightful, and amazing apple cinnamon pancakes. There are no words to describe the experience of dunking a forkful of this heavenly thing in your mouth. Have them to know what we are talking about.
Finally, the best silver dollar pancakes in New York. Even if these tiny tykes leave you forever asking for more, you cannot deny silver dollar pancakes their charm. The Stanton Social (99 Stanton St/ 212-995-0099) has silver dollar pancakes in more flavors that you can conceive of – lemon blackberry, buttermilk and vanilla bean.
The leaves us quite hungry, so we are off to do our rounds of a few more eating joints in Manhattan so we can keep you updated on the wonders of the culinary world. See you later.
